The care and safety of the mentally ill of Oklahoma is in jeopardy!

A national effort is currently underway by the American Psychological Association to obtain independent privileges for psychologists to prescribe psychiatric medications. Training of psychologists centers around an internet-based psychopharmacology course.

It is important to remember:

  • Psychologists do not have the medical background necessary to safely prescribe brain medications to patients.
  • Medications for the treatment of mental illnesses are among the most potentially dangerous drugs for patients, and when not properly used, can cause convulsions, epilepsy, heart arrhythmia, blood diseases, coma, stroke, or even death.

  • A psychiatrist is a medical physician trained to diagnose and treat medical-psychiatric illnesses.

  • Some psychiatric illnesses may appear to be psychological when in fact they have a critical biological cause, like depression caused by thyroid disease.

Help keep the mentally ill of Oklahoma safe!
