Mental illnesses constitute one of the most serious, unrecognized public health problems in America today. As a group, they afflict one in three people.

The source of most barriers to the mentally ill and their families is stigma. Stigma consists of negative attitudes, stereotypes, assumptions and misunderstanding about the diseases and the people who suffer from them.

Myths and silence continue to shroud mental illness. To overcome those myths and end the silence, the Oklahoma Psychiatric Physicians Association has undertaken a campaign to make the public more aware of the facts about the mental illnesses.

As media professionals, please use these news releases to educate the public. We hope you will find this a useful resource and we invite your comments and questions.
